The remaining days for Jose De Venecia as speaker of one of the most powerful stronghold of Philippine government is almost coming to an end. While I was watching the television, DeVenecia's gruesome face over the grinning smiles of Nograles allies surfaced the headline news.
One can speculate that this is a form of tactful and subtle revenge of the administration to oust the house speaker. Sounds logical, eh? Of course, why would the president want an ally of whom her robust power is now turning feeble?
Late last year, we remember how the whistle-blower Joey de Venecia, the son of the house speaker himself, testified and imperil Mrs. Arroyo's presidency once again. Joey's testimony regarding the anomalous ZTE contract directly linking first gentleman Mike Arroyo, paved the way for De Venecia's soon expected downfall. This is how our dirty political system works. This is how we see one betraying the other, this is where we see the house of representatives which should have been a place to represent the people becoming as a mere arena for traditional politicians and the like. This is where greed dominates respect, trust, love for one's country.
No wonder the public is becoming indifferent to these endless and tiring fights of the avarice of these politicians. The Filipino people are suffering why some officials steal money out of the labor of taxpayers and spend it to finance their luxuries and lavish lifestyles.. The people's yearning for social, economic and political change seems to be a dream impossible to materialize. Why will the people care with what is happening to the congress now, if there are millions of them landless,if there are millions of them deprived of the basic necessities of life, if many of them shoulder the burden caused by these corrupt and futile officials.
How will the people react? If they know that mere changing the Speaker of the House is just like saying that one must replace one rotten tomatoes with a new fresh ones, leaving the remaining tomatoes still rotten. Well in this case, nograles is not a fresh tomato anyway. So what can we expect?
Too many issues are still held in question; the never-ending and remorseless killings of journalists, the interminable issues on corruption, these contemptible scandal. Is this the kind of leaderchip that we want???
The inevitable decadence of the Speaker of the House might just satisfies one of the famous concepts economics, the principle of diminishing return. After hitting the satiation point, there will come a time where that thing will fall down. Sure, Arroyo as economist knows this.
Perhaps for once, I was moved by JDV's speech. Although I am still dubious as to why he declared this only now. I can only see one main reason why he did this only now, beacuse before he had a self-interest. And now, he had no choice. It has always been like that. Self-Interest first over the values, morals and nationalistic goals.
